For the last Humanize episode of the season, I thought it would be edifying to explore how Discovery Institute’s institutional programs dovetail with the work of the Center on Human Exceptionalism. Who better to ask than our intrepid president, Steven J. Buri?

Buri graduated from Washington State University with a double major in political science and criminal justice. Before joining Discovery, he served in various capacities in government at the local, state, and federal levels. From 1996-1998, Buri was a senior staff member to U.S. Senator Slade Gorton (R-WA), representing him in international trade, foreign policy and immigration issues. He was also active in various statewide political campaigns.

In 2009, Buri founded the Roanoke Conference designed to connect activists and elected officials with students and young professionals. In 2010, he was selected by the American Council of Young Political Leaders to participate as part of a bi-partisan political delegation to Nepal. The delegation met with local and national leaders in Nepal — including its president — to share policy lessons from the United States and to promote the adoption of a new Nepalese constitution.

He was the Deputy Mayor of Newcastle, Washington, from 2010-2011 and Mayor from 2014-2015.

Buri joined Discovery Institute in April 2000 as Executive Director and was named Vice President in 2005. He was appointed President in December 2011.
