Mentally Ill Woman Accessed Assisted Suicide in Oregon

Most of the media are in the tank (remember Brittany Maynard?) for the assisted suicide/euthanasia agenda and, as a consequence, are primarily interested in reporting on stories of “good deaths.” That criticism does not apply to The Atlantic, which recently published a scathing exposé of the cruelties inherent in Canada’s euthanasia regime. Now, staff writer Elizabeth Bruenig has published an important piece detailing how a mentally ill 31-year-old woman named Eileen Mihich was able to access poison drugs by writing herself a fraudulent prescription for death, which was filled unquestioningly by a willing pharmacy.

Eileen apparently had no discernible diseases but complained about severe abdominal pain. From, “It Was Too Easy for Her to Kill Herself“:

Mihich had told her family that she was debilitated by a mysterious abdominal pain and was interested in a medically assisted death. But her suicide still shocked her two closest relatives: her cousin Sarah (who asked to be referred to by her first name, to protect her privacy) and aunt Veronica Torina…Nearly a year on, they are still trying to solve the mystery of her death.…

At the medical examiner’s office weeks later, they received her phone, her wallet, and pharmacy receipts for prescription drugs commonly used to end the lives of patients with untreatable illnesses.

They also learned that Mihich’s body bore no signs of illness. Mihich had been suffering, but she had not been on the verge of death.

Proposed Oregon Initiative Would Outlaw Animal Agriculture and Hunting

Animal rights activists pretend to be about animal welfare, but in reality, they want to outlaw all instrumental uses of animals.

We can see this illustrated in Oregon, where animal rights activists are attempting to qualify Initiative Petition 28 for the November ballot. Proponents claim it is about ending cruelty. But the actual purpose is to effectively outlaw animal agriculture and hunting in the state.

First, if passed, the law would create a legal equality between animals and people. From the Yes on IP28 website:

We believe everyone should be equally protected under the law, and that all animals deserve equal consideration, regardless of whether or not we consider them our companions. All animals deserve a life free from cruelty.

Oregon Bill Would Also Allow Nondoctors to Prescribe Assisted Suicide

Yesterday, I posted about a Vermont bill that would allow nondoctors to prescribe death. I found out today that Oregon has similar legislation pending that would allow “providers” to lethally prescribe. SB 1003 specifies that “provider” can mean a licensed physician, a licensed physician assistant, or a licensed nurse practitioner. I wouldn’t trust a PA or NP to diagnose me with six months to live. Would you? That is not a putdown. These valuable medical professionals’ primary roles are to provide generalized care, monitor and manage chronic conditions, and provide wellness services. But they are not physicians. They receive less education and specialized training as compared with physician-certified specialists like cardiologists, oncologists, nephrologists, or neurologists. I suspect that the reason for expanding categories of eligible lethal Read More ›

At Least 60 People With Eating Disorders Euthanized or Assisted in Suicide Since 2012

A very disturbing — but, alas, unsurprising — report has been published from a review of medical studies that demonstrates that at least 60, but almost surely more, people with eating disorders (EDs) have been euthanized or assisted in suicide between 2012 and 2024. This includes at least three patients from the U.S. Read More ›

‘Tobacco-Free Generation’ Establishes Age-Based Ban on Sale of Tobacco — to Adults

I don't smoke, but I am wary of efforts to prevent other people from so doing. Now, blue cities — and soon states, most likely — have hit upon a way to ban smoking known as "Tobacco Free Generation" (TFG). Read More ›

Oregon Bill Forcing Health Insurance to Pay for Gender Transitions Excludes Detransition Care

This is all so corrosive to societal cohesiveness, and goodness knows how it will end. But good on Representative Diehl for bringing greater clarity to this important social controversy. Some gender identifications are seen by progressives as better than others. Read More ›

Oregon Legislation Would Allow Children to Decide About Abortion/Transgenderism Without Parental Consent

Political progressives want to divorce children from their parents regarding crucial issues such as sex, abortion, and transgenderism. Pending legislation from the hard-left state of Oregon would do just that. Read More ›

Suicide Tourism Comes to Oregon

Assisted-suicide activists always promise that strict guidelines will protect against abuse. It’s a big con. The guidelines are not really strict. They rely primarily on self-reporting. And they are meant to be temporary: As soon as political conditions permit, the access to doctor-prescribed death expands. Read More ›
